“Funny how silence can be the loudest sound of all.”
— Lauren Oliver, Vanishing Girls
Ceiling fans seem to have universal settings, first setting you can’t feel anything, second setting is its almost there, third setting is shaking your house and going to fly off and kill you in your sleep.
Dear Textbooks,
You told me to be a professional. Polished, respectful, and unattached to my Residents. You never told me that when they die it breaks your heart and they become your unofficial family.
You never said that when family members never visit that it makes you angry on their behalf. That when they do it makes you excited.
That a dementia patient fast declining can teach you so much and make you believe in humanity again.
You never said how much respect is taught when you take care of veterans and how much they served their country. The respect as they battle the hardship of not being able to move.
My residents taught me more than you did. They taught me hope, reality, and of courage. So I’m calling your BS when it comes not getting attached.
My attachment makes me a better caregiver. I like to get them the juice they like, I know if they like coffee when they get up, if they like those pair of pants. I am interested in their lives and that helps me know if their behavior is normal or if something is wrong.
Cordially,
A CNA
